It's comforting to know that others know how you feel...... as most know, the Hag had more and more difficulty getting up and down this winter. Last week my big galoot buffoon Shadow also crashed. Trips to the vet gave him no relief and on Thursday we made the decision to put him down. He made his final trip to the vets in the horse trailer (how do you get a paralyzed 120 lb rottweiler out of the back seat!) deep in straw and we said goodbye. I had no way of knowing I'd be burying two before the week was out. But the next day the Hag couldnt get up again. Once again, the wonderful neighbors, family and friends rallyed round to get her up. but it was the third time this week and I finally said despite the heart, guts and appetite this mare still had, her body and legs just couldnt support her. I called Dr. Denise to come on Saturday at 10. On Saturday morning I woke at 5:30- I had to go outside. She was down again and once more couldnt get up. I couldn't put her through another morning of that. I called Dr. Denise and she came out early to put her down. She was buried with her favorite food--- a dozen fresh apple fritters, and
Shadow was laid to rest next to her with his decapitated toy bird and squirrel. It's been a week now and I still can't get used to not walking out in the morning and yelling 'hey ya big fat booby hatch!'. I've said that since i was 14 years old. It just doesnt seem right. How do you replace something that's been such an integral part of your life? My first Regional title (believe it or not, the Sehag was quite the show horse in her day- Class A arab will never be the same).... she taught me tenacity, toughness as well as respect and unconditional love.
I will always have horses, but never another like her.
