Honestly? I am beyond geeked about the transformation from last week’s lesson to this weeks.

Last week, I took my first lesson with a new trainer on my mare. Mare has sketchy (not good) past and some issues. She has essentially had the better part of 2 years off. I started her back to work about 8 weeks ago. The lesson was horrid. I was nervous, she was nervous, it was a train wreck. We’d been schooling “okay” at home, the buck is gone, no more rearing, but still this head flipping thing.
And it was horrid at my first lesson. Trainer asked me to change the bit and put a standing martingale on her. Tuesday, I put the standing on. Like a different freaking horse. Rode briefly and she was being so good that I put her away.
Had lesson last night. Even trainer commented that it was like a different horse. I think much had to do with me focusing on being relaxed too. But I tell ya what. I was pretty geeked. I could ASK and she was compliant. Not pissy. We have a lot to work on together. But I am so very pleased with how she went last night.
Further critiques welcome. This video is about 4 min long and shows warmup, some two point work, and then a little OF drill. You’ll note that I missed my diagonal lot in the drill. Kind of missed my brain too.
But based on prior critiques, I did ask trainer about my hands. And her response was: “Your mare will let you know. She’s going well. You’re fine. I’ll let you know when there’s a problem.” I think I am doing better at the lesson than I did on Sunday as well.
Geeked. Really really geeked.

PS: If you don’t know me/horse, the deal is that I’ve been riding since, well…forever. But am very green/novice at H/J. So is mare. Both of us grew up Western. So…I’m an adult novice on a green horse with issues and we’re working really hard. My steady eddy mare has been out of commission (better to be learning on) so I had to pull this mare back out. Drastic improvement though just in the last few weeks.
